This week’s episode of IllSide Radio focuses solely on the 16th Anniversary of Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, the celebrated purple tape. We take a look back at that magnificent era in Hip-Hop music and how the album was initially received. We look at its effect on Hip-Hop music overall and the culture as well.
Not only did it launch the career of Raekwon but it was also the first hint that Ghostface Killah would be the brilliant soloist that he became. The album gave us our first look at Capadonna. How many albums would try to reproduce that brilliance, including Rae himself 15 years later? Where does the album stand all time? We answer it with gusto.
I can’t lie to you, this is one of the most fun episodes of this show we have ever done. Just going back and remembering that era and remembering how it felt going through that album the first time. Hearing those immortal skits and some of those songs together just brought back a flood of memories and enthusiasm.
